Synopsis: Indonesia, Australia's nearest and largest Asian neighbour, has grown in this century from a Dutch colonial territory into the third most populous state of Asia and the most populous Muslim nation in the world. This subject examines the major factors which have shaped the Indonesian experience in this century, including ethnic and religious diversity; colonialism; nationalism; Islamic reform; communism; authoritarian government and the independence movement in East Timor.
Assessment: One essay (2000 words): 45% + Class project (equivalent 1500 words): 30% + Class test (1000 words): 25%
