Synopsis: This unit covers four components under the theme of personal and professional development and communication skills. Legal issues, includes common law, statute law and legal responsibilities of healthcare professionals. Healthcare ethics includes ethical theory, professional ethics, confidentiality, informed consent and relationships with patients. Health enhancement examines the relationship between biological science/wellbeing and lifestyle choices/health outcomes. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills are developed within the framework of the health professional interview. The interrelationship of these components is explored through examination of a number of umbrella health issues.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to: 1. demonstrate a range of effective tertiary study skills and knowledge of personal wellbeing (including personal stress management skills); 2. display basic communication skills, basic interview skills, empathy and the ability to constructively assess and reflect on their own performance; 3. define different models of the healthcare provider/patient relationship as they pertain to patients' experiences of illness and cultural difference; 4. demonstrate awareness about lifestyle choices and the ability of individuals to change behaviours to healthier patterns if desired; 5. develop an understanding of the nature of professional ethics and different ethical perspectives as related to healthcare; 6. understand the importance of confidentiality and informed consent; 7. discuss issues related to justice in the healthcare system; and 8. demonstrate knowledge of common law and statute law pertinent to healthcare practice and explain why the study of health law is an essential aspect of professional practice.

Assessment: 2 x 1000 word written assignments (health enhancement component): = 20% + 2500 word written assignments (law/ethics components): 50% + 1500 - 2000 word report on site visit (communication skills component): 30%

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week including contact time and private study, averaged over the 13 week semester - a total of 156 hours.
