Synopsis: This unit introduces participants to the teaching and learning cycle. Participants will develop learning outcomes, align content and teaching methodologies with those outcomes, gather feedback, and reflect on their teaching. Participants will demonstrate competence in lecturing, small group teaching, and working with individual students. Face-to-face and mediated approaches to teaching are also examined.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, participants should be able to: - Identify the principles of good teaching in higher education. - Apply those principles of good teaching. - Analyse the strengths of a range of teaching methods. - Explain student differences within their classes. - Demonstrate competence in three major teaching approaches.

Assessment: Assessment consists of four tasks: - the listing of personally relevant principles of good teaching; - three reports on the utilisation of the reflective cycle for didactic and large group teaching; " experiential/small group teaching and one to one teaching, and; - a detailed evaluation of the unit. The tasks are intended to be collected in a basic professional portfolio.

Contact Hours: Equivalent of 2 hrs per week (face-to-face and on-line)

Prerequisites: First degree or equivalent

Corequisites: Concurrently teaching
