Synopsis: Since the invention of the printing press in the 15th century, the reproduction of knowledge and social practice has become increasingly reliant and dependent on mass media. The general relation between culture, media and society on one hand and how it shows up in the design of media products will be the topic of this introductory unit. The unit will provide insights into advanced media theory and put historical media phenomena into perspective.
Assessment: Essay (1800-2000 words, in English or German): 40% + Class paper (500 words): 10% + 3 homework exercises: 20% + Examination (1 hour): 30%
Contact Hours: 3 hours (1 x lecture and 2 x tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: GRN2325 or higher
