Leader: Professor Grahame Coleman
Offered:
Caulfield Second semester 2005 (OCL)
Synopsis: This unit provides training in the design and conduct of independent research. Students will learn how to design and evaluate research in the area of animal behaviour; how to consider this in the context of animal welfare and ethics; how to conduct literature searches; how to successfully collect, analyse and interpret data; and how to communicate findings in written form with clarity.
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will have identified an animal welfare related issue requiring further research and working through the process of planning and designing a project with which to address this issue. Having completed this exercise they will be able to: 1. Complete a literature review, research proposal and an ethics application relevant to an animal welfare issue; 2. demonstrate considerable knowledge and skills in research design, in evaluating existing literature and in the conduct of research design in the field of animal welfare; 3. understand the complexity of scientific research and the value of careful problem analysis and planning in relation to ethical, budgetary and practical constraints; 4. appreciate the importance of discussing planned projects with a range of people, so as to benefit from different perspectives and the multidisciplinary approach now common in research institutions.
Assessment: Literature review - 1,500 words (25%) + Written proposal -1,500 words (25%) + Ethics application (25%) + Poster or oral presentation (25%).
