Synopsis: The unit will focus on a close reading of a major novel (Zola's 'Nana') and discussion of selected paintings and writings from social history. Topics examined will include images of the prostitute, the policing of sexuality, the figure of the femme fatale, gender and social class.

Objectives: On completion of this subject students will have acquired a critical understanding of representations of women and the female body in the context of social history, and with particular reference to 19th-century France. They will engage with questions of narrative strategy, pictorial representation, and psychoanalytic theory.

Assessment: Class presentation (1500 words): 25% + Essay (2000 words): 45% + Explication de texte: 30%
