Synopsis: This unit builds on the skills acquired in French Studies 7 and 8. Through homework prepared under guidance and class tutorials, it will help students to refine their written and oral proficiency in the areas of exposition and argumentation. Analytical work on selected documents will allow students to develop a critical awareness of some of the main socio-cultural issues in the French-speaking world. The unit constitutes an excellent preparation for the DALF exam (B1 & B2 units), a prerequisite when seeking entry to most postgraduate courses in French universities and applying for French government scholarships.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate their mastery of advanced analytical, expository and argumentative skills in the context of a) essay writing, b) written and oral compte rendu activities. They should also be able to apply these skills to the reading and presentation of in-depth articles taken from publications such as Le Monde Diplomatique, Alternatives economiques, etc. Students will also be expected to present an informed viewpoint on some of the main socio cultural issues in France today.

Assessment: Two take-home assignments (essay, 1000 words: 10% and compte rendu, 350 words: 5%): 15% + Two class assignments (essay, 1000 words: 20% and compte rendu 350 words: 20%): 40% + End of semester oral presentation: 20% + End of semester written exam: 25%
