Synopsis: Sexual assault is addressed in this unit as it pertains to a doctor working in a therapeutic and forensic role with victims. Theoretical and historical perspectives are considered in order to provide a thorough grounding for practical discussions on current legislation, police investigation and what is known about offenders. The medical role will be examined in detail. Forensic responsibilities are dealth with including specimen collection, laboratory liaison and injury interpretation. The unit will address the medico-legal report and the role of the expert witness in court appearances.

Objectives: On completion of the unit the student will be expected to: 1. display an understanding of historical and theoretical aspects of sexual assault; 2. demonstrate an understanding of the broad range of circumstances where sexual assault occurs; 3. conduct a comprehensive medical servie to a victim of sexual assault; 4. demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the forensic responsibilities in sexual assault; 5. be able to accurately interpret injuries resulting from sexual assault; 6. prepare medico-legal reports in cases of sexual assault.
