Geophysics: Geoscience software ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(SCI)

Leader: Professor Jim Cull

Offered:
Clayton Second semester 2005 (Day)

Synopsis: This unit gives a broad introduction to IT, imaging and data management issues for mineral exploration and general geological mapping. It is based on the practical application of software designed for geophysical surveys (including mineral exploration, groundwater and geotechnical surveys). Students will gain a practical understanding of GIS and IT methods used for gravity, magnetic, and EM surveys. Topics include gridding, navigating, GPS, and geomatics using several software systems including SURFER, ERMAPPER, INTREPID, MAPINFO etc. These systems will provide a foundation for the interpretation of high-density (eg airborne) geophysical data using a range of numerical modeling programs.

Objectives: This unit will provide students with the opportunity to understand the application of computer methods in geoscience. Students will learn the basic of geospatial science particularly related to GIS issues of data management, display, and analysis. They will learn how to use industry-standard software to manage complex data streams using ER-mapper, Surfer, Map-info, EM-vision, GM-sys and related products. They will examine variations in data formats and software compatibility covering a broad range of data using different survey methods suitable for different objectives.

Assessment: Practical work/assignments: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 70%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical per week

Prohibitions: GPS3011, GPS3022, GPS3232
