Synopsis: Assignment to a human research ethics committee. Observation of aspects of their functioning, including understanding the different perspectives of the various members of the committee, and the administrative processes involved in running such a committee.
Objectives: On completion of this unit students should be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the composition of a human research ethics committee, and the roles of each of the different members; 2. demonstrate an understanding of the practical processes involved in the day-to-day running of a human research ethics committee; and 3. critically evaluate the ethical considerations of typical quantitative and qualitative research proposals from the perspective of the different members of a human research ethics committee.
Assessment: Verbal presentation + Written assignment
