Sustainable Production and Consumption ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: Considerable progress has been made toward developing innovative systems of production and consumption that can reduce society's demand for resources and energy. The course takes students though the development of various tools and concepts including eco-design, product stewardship, eco-efficiency and supply chain management with an emphasis on life-cycle approaches. Case studies taken from leading edge international and local examples including closed loop systems and service-oriented business models are used to illustrate the concepts and form part of an analysis of the regulatory and business drivers.

Objectives: Upon completion students will able to demonstrate: 1. An understanding of leading edge thinking and practice in the field of sustainable production and consumption. 2. The ability to analyse systems of production and consumption in terms of sustainability. 3. The knowledge and skills required to develop and apply systems of sustainable production and consumption in an organisation.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 45% + Case study (2000 words): 45% + Class presentation: 10%
