Synopsis: An overview of scientific and common sense method and how it is socially constructed. General system theory as a tool for developing a critical understanding of the complex phenomena we perceive as nature and society. The unit is based on the ideas that environmental dislocation arises from epistemological and social structures not coherent with the ecosystems they depend upon; that it is possible to make generalisations about the behaviour of the complex processes that arise from epistemological and social structures and then that we can alter them.
