Synopsis: The unit will investigate the idea of the contemporary public sphere and the forms and histories of the written genres which constitute it. How do theories of genre and discourse analysis connect to the writing which circulates in public life, such as the personal essay, the opinion piece and internet writing? How do these theories connect to specific examples of contemporary Australian fiction? What skills do we need to contribute our own writing to these cultural zones? Students will complete two major pieces of writing over the semester, which will be drafted, revised and edited during the workshop sessions.
