English as an International Language: Minor Thesis and Methodology ( 24 points, SCA Band 1, 0.500 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit will provide students with the opportunity to engage in supervised, independent research in an area of interest related to English as an international language through its cultural, social and ideological influences. During the development of their thesis, students will be expected to review a range of set texts, analyse various theoretical positions related to English as an international language and construct a critical approach to the issues and themes associated with it.

Objectives: Objectives (strictly 4000 characters maximum, including spaces) Upon the successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate: 1. detailed knowledge and understanding of the cultural, ideological, and political influences associated with the spread of English around the globe as an international language, 2. knowledge of the relationship between language, culture, and ideology, 3. a critical appreciation of the literature on the spread of English around the world, including the ability to form an objective response to the issues raised in the literature, 4. the ability to undertake scholarly independent research, and 5. the ability to recognize the differences between evidence, interpretation, opinion and facts in secondary sources.

Assessment: Literature Review (1500 words): 10%; Position paper (1500 words): 10%; Oral presentation (1000 words): 10%; Minor Thesis (12000 - 14000 words): 70%.

Contact Hours: Methodology 6 weeks x one 2hr seminar/week. Minor thesis by regular consultation with supervisor throughout the semester. (Minimum of 20 contact hours).
