Synopsis: Theoretical and empirical underpinnings of policy, planning and management in tertiary institutions including at the level of individual institutions. Recent theories and empirical research concerning the nature, role and function of higher education institutions. The 'Idea of the University'. Factors affecting educational institutions including globalisation and internationalisation, competition and tensions between academic and corporate cultures, Research policy issues. Cross-sectoral relations.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to locate recent developments in relation to theories and empirical research concerning the nature, role and function of higher education institutions in the modern community; understand the ways in which the application of research and development in higher education may lead to improvements in national education programs, and in the management of individual tertiary institutions; show the ways and means in which administrative practice may be improved and expanded through such an application to deal with the increasingly complex and diverse requirements of institutional management in the current Australian scene, including international requirements, and cross-sectoral issues.
