Synopsis: Issues and debates changing the way our society educates the next generation. How knowledge, skills and attitudes are selected, organised and distributed through different education institutions and how patterns of educational provision are changing. Sociological approaches in the analysis of education.

Objectives: The broad aims of this unit are to introduce you to contextual analysis as a way of understanding continuity and change in education and training; to familiarise you with contemporary patterns of change in education and training. As a result of studying this unit students are expected to understand the way social contexts shape and constrain education and training; recognise different perspectives in contextual analysis and know about patterns of continuity and change in the education and training of at least one country.

Assessment: Masters students) - Critical Review (2000 words): 20%; Research paper (6000 words): 80%; (Doctoral students) - Critical Review (2000 words): 20%; Research paper (8000 words): 80%
