Evaluation and development of educational software ( 12 points, SCA Band 0, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: Computer-based techniques as a means of learning. Techniques and problems in the selection, evaluation, design, implementation and use of computer programs in educational settings will feature in this unit.

Objectives: At the conclusion of module 1 of this unit, students will have developed an understanding of the terminology and methods used in evaluating technology based software and programs; critiqued an evaluation report concerning technology based software and/or programs and designed an instrument to suit their own evaluation purposes. At the conclusion of module 2 students will be able to critique educational software; provide evidence to substantiate their views on the merits of nominated software. At the conclusion of module 3 students will have developed a basic understanding of the fundamentals of logo programming; have developed an understanding of how logo is used in various educational settings; and be familiar with the pedagogy underpinning the use of logo. At the conclusion of module 4 students will be familiar with the issues and methods of teaching computer programming in school and professional contexts; understand the basic concepts and techniques of computer programming; have developed simple computer applications using a recognised programming language; and understand a range of pedagogical approaches to the teaching of computer programming.

Assessment: Two software assessment tasks (2 x 2000 words each = 4000 words): 50% + Essay (4000 words): 50%
