Clayton Second semester 2005 (Evening)
Synopsis: Characteristics of different varieties of English (eg Singaporean English and Australian English for international communication), focusing on their relation to cultural knowledge and pragmatics. Students practise information access strategies and use multimedia for their own language learning. The unit focuses on real-world language use relevant to the student group (eg language of commerce, early childhood teaching, vocational language teaching, instruction giving).
Objectives: The learning objectives of this unit are to develop language awareness in general and an awareness of the role of English as an international language in particular; to develop awareness of students' role in the teaching of English as an international language; to become familiar with major developments in the theory and practice of teaching EFL; to develop a range of teaching strategies based on the sound understanding of how students learn languages.
Assessment: Reflective journal (3000 words): 30% + Oral presentation (2000: 20% + Proficiency test or written portfolio (3000-5000 words): 50%
