Synopsis: This unit seeks to satisfy present Victorian Government and Department of Education, Employment and Training's guidelines in regard to the introduction of LOTE in the primary school. Topics include strategies for teaching a LOTE, ways of developing learners' literacy and oracy skills, integrating the development of linguistic and sociocultural knowledge, monitoring learners' progress and performance, selecting and adapting materials, and designing units of work, and the articulation between primary and secondary school LOTE programs.
Objectives: As a result of studying this unit students are expected to consider the implications of first and second language acquisition research for language teaching and learning; familiarise themselves with current language policy and curriculum developments and their primary schooling pedagogical implications; develop lesson plans with appropriately expressed objectives; sequencing of exercises and activities and the needs and interests of different student groupings in the primary school setting; design and practice a variety of ways of developing the 4 macro-skills individually and in combination; explore various strategies for monitoring and reporting on students' progress in a language; develop a unit of work which encompasses strategies for a multi-level class and integrates cultural knowledge.
Assessment: Development of a unit of work for a primary school class, including appropriate assessment tasks as per the study design (50%); successful completion of practicum and submission of folio (50%)
