Synopsis: This unit introduces students to basic underlying principles of foreign/second language education in secondary schools. It incorporates a basic theoretical framework which underpins ways of approaching teaching and learning languages in monolingual and multilingual educational settings and focuses on a variety of techniques to trial with different types of LOTE classes. The unit will include the use and development of information and communication technologies suited to the relevant language of the students.

Objectives: The learning objectives for this unit are to introduce teacher trainees in second/ foreign languages to basic theoretical principles which underpin current pedagogy in this field; enable future teachers of second/ foreign languages to work with CSF ll; provide an opportunity for future teachers of second/foreign languages to incorporate information and communication technologies into their course design; enable teacher trainees in second/foreign languages to plan for and implement lessons in their language which engage learners and develop their cognitive, creative and linguistic skills; introduce teacher trainees in second/ foreign languages to aspects of assessment of language knowledge, skills and content.

Assessment: Fieldwork assignment 50%; Multimedia development and resources preparation for a Year 7 to 10 class 50%

Prerequisites: A 3 year post Year 12 major in a Language Other Than English at tertiary level or its equivalent
