Synopsis: This unit provides a theoretical and practical basis for the design and implementation of a comprehensive physical education program. Students will gain an insight into curriculum content and issues, including an understanding of 7-10 physical education, VCE and VET courses. Students will study the fundamental teaching skills encompassing psychological and physiological aspects in a secondary school program. Students will study the pedagogy of physical education as an important focus which has broad relevance in the delivery of information concerning health and physical education to the community. Students will apply both theoretical and practical learning in a school setting.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students should have acquired an understanding of curriculum content and issues involved in a Health and Physical Education program; knowledge of the pedagogical and intellectual foundation of Physical Education; an understanding of the psychological and physiological needs of secondary students, particularly those relevant to a Physical Education setting; skill in developing and planning a Physical Education program; and the ability to deliver a program whilst taking into account individual and class needs.
Assessment: Two assignments (1500 words each): 60%; Journal (1000 words): 40%, and satisfactory completion of practicum
