Synopsis: This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and preparation strategies necessary for the secondary teacher of media studies. Students taking this unit will investigate contemporary issues in the media, such as representation, narrative and social values in the media forms of film, television, print media, radio and electronic information systems. Students will draw upon their knowledge of these issues to design and implement lessons suitable for a range of levels in the secondary school.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will have undertaken research in selected readings related to the production of Australian media, students will have investigated a variety of Australian initiatives in the media, and be able to report on their efficacy; students will be able to summarise and present a range of issues informed by their study, in either written or video format; students should be able to incorporate aspects of their research findings, and the recent media developments into their provision of programs in schools.

Assessment: Essay on aspects of Australian Media (1500 words): 30% + Series of short prescribed readings & associated tasks (equivalent 2500 words): 70%

Prerequisites: Two full years of study in Media Studies
