Synopsis: Preparation for teaching psychology in post-primary schools as a discrete unit in middle school and Years 11 and 12 and in a range of middle school and junior school units such as health, life skills, personal development, pastoral care and social education. Design, implementation and evaluation of effective curriculum and teaching programs. Teaching skills and various resources and strategies including observations, field studies and experiments. Ethical issues.
Objectives: As a result of studying this unit students are expected to understand the nature and scope of psychology as it is taught in secondary schools (to Year 11) and the students who study it; appreciate why psychology is taught in schools and how such studies may be undertaken; develop skills in teaching various components of psychology courses (to Year 11) such as developing appropriate curriculum units; planning and organising classroom lessons; using a variety of teaching strategies; selecting and utilising appropriate resources; assessing and reporting student learning; be able to foster an interest in and a positive attitude toward the understanding of human development and behaviour and appreciate the importance of ethical issues in teaching and research involving human and animal subjects.
Assessment: Lesson plans: 40% + Curriculum resources to support one area of unit 1 or 3 (equivalent to 2000 words): 40% + Lesson Observation Assignment: 20% + students must complete at least 45 days teaching practice (50 for Double Degree students) per year and gain a rating of 'Satisfactory' for this + Student participation in the unit is vital and an 80% attendance requirement for on-campus students and 80% on-line participation for off-campus students is required.
