Synopsis: This unit introduces the teaching and learning of history as a discipline and as a SOSE or Humanities strand. Topics include introductions to curriculum documents lesson-planning, SOSE curriculum perspectives and values, questioning techniques, cooperative group-work, inquiry methodology, development of literacy assessment strategies, and using information and communication technologies.
Objectives: The unit offers a practical focus on teaching and learning strategies that assist secondary students to develop historical knowledge; identify links between the past and the present, the local and the global aid between different histories; develop life, career and wider study skills through development of the skills associated specifically with the study of History; and develop values, attitudes and behaviours consistent with positive global citizenship.
Assessment: Formal lesson plan: 50%; SOSE-Stream/History Resource Guide: 50% + Student participation in the unit is vital and there is a minimum attendance requirement of 80%.
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Prerequisites: Students must have at least a minor sequence in history from a recognised institution.
