Synopsis: This unit is designed to introduce students to the educational contexts in which teaching and learning occur. Students will consider the social and cultural contexts that influence education at the local, national and international level. Students will use a range of sociological frameworks to explore educational contexts. This will include a consideration of a range of educational policies in various settings. It is intended that students will acquire a broad-based understanding of the diverse nature and practice of teachers' work.

Objectives: The broad aims of this unit are to understand the social and cultural contexts that influence education at the local, national and international level; to use a range of sociological frameworks to explore educational contexts; critique educational policies on a range of topics; develop an awareness and understanding of the diverse nature and practice of teachers' work.

Assessment: Essay: 45%, Web-based policy report: 25%, Journal: 30%
