Synopsis: This unit provides students with an understanding of the role and nature of literacy in the primary school. Students will explore the interface between home and school literacy practices, within the context of culturally and linguistically diverse children, socially and economically disadvantaged families and the gendered nature of language and literacy. The multiple literacies which are embedded within these sociocultural and linguistic communities will be critiqued. Students will examine their own experiences and beliefs in relation to the theories of others. A range of appropriate pedagogical strategies will be used to develop students understanding of ways to enhance children's learning.

Objectives: On completion of this unit students should: i. be able to critically examine personal assumptions about language and literacy learning; ii. be able to provide a rationale for the inclusion of literacy in the primary school curriculum; iii. have a deepened appreciation of the similarities and differences between home and educational settings on children's learning; iv. be able to take a more informed position on the various roles others play in children's language and literacy development and learning; v. become more familiar with the different views on and theories about, children's language and literacy development and learning. vi. be able to use a range of learning and teaching strategies to develop children's literacy understandings. vii. be familiar with the use of pedagogical documentation as a tool for learning and teaching

Assessment: Literacy Folio (2000 words) (50%) + Reflective Essay (2000 words) (50%)
