Synopsis: This unit will address issues in art and music in primary schooling The unit provides guidance and workshops about children's art and explores visual art activities and art appreciation suitable for primary children. In the music component students will discuss rationales, program development and evaluation in music. Students will participate in workshops that explore classroom music making, utilizing a range of educational approaches. Students will extend their evaluative and teaching skills and develop an understanding of the role of the teacher in schooling.
Objectives: On completing of this unit students should have developed an understanding of the nature of art - its meaning and function; the characteristics, qualities and development of child art; ways in which children may reflect upon and respond to art works; have developed the ability to work freely and discriminatingly in a range of art/craft materials to be found in the primary school.
Assessment: Written assignment on music education: 20%. Practical instrumental test: 30%. Presentation of art works resulting from practical workshop activities: 50%. Hurdle requirements (1) to teach three Visual Art or Media Studies lessons during an appropriate practicum; and (2) attendance at all composition workshops.
