Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the major influences on children's language and literacy development with a focus on the importance of establishing a partnership between the home and the school in this development. The unit will examine relevant theoretical models and derived approaches in the teaching of English as well as to relate this study to practical implementation in educational settings. The role of the English curriculum as a fundamental Key Learning Area, including the place of learning technologies relating to English and the Victorian Early Years Literacy program, will be addressed.

Objectives: After satisfactorily completing this unit you should have a basic understanding of how children become inducted into their first language; be familiar with the role language plays in children's learning; understand what makes successful English programs and some ways of catering for children's individual and group learning needs; and be familiar with a range of strategies to use in developing children's literacy skills.

Assessment: Written assignment (2400 words): 60% + Professional folio and Journal (1600 words): 40%
