Not offered in 2005.

Synopsis: This unit develops knowledge, skills and attitudes about teaching and learning in primary school mathematics. Topics will include children's mathematical development in early number concepts, written and mental computation, estimation, fractions and decimals, measurement, space, and chance and data, providing opportunity for students to develop their personal confidence and competence in mathematics. Focus will be given to the teaching of problem solving and the use of information technology in the context of mathematics (e.g. appropriate software, video, calculator use). Students will explore a range of classroom teaching models and assessment strategies.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to provide a rationale for the inclusion of mathematics in the primary school curriculum; be aware of all content areas outlined in Department of Education publications; have developed a range of appropriate strategies to assist children's development of number sense particularly in the early years of schooling; have developed techniques that link mathematics to practical applications particularly in relation to measurement and space; be developing an understanding of the role of information technology in the mathematics classroom; be able to identify key aspects in children's development of concepts and skills related to number including fractions and decimals, chance and data and space; have developed techniques that link mathematics to practical applications using a problem-solving approach; be confident about planning and managing a range of learning activities which develop children's mathematical understanding and be able to use a variety of assessment techniques to evaluate student learning in mathematics.

Assessment: A written report on observational mathematical tasks undertaken by children (1200 words): 30%; Assignment 2: Contexts in the teaching of mathematics 30% (1200 words); Class test: 40% (2 hrs - equivalent 1600 words) + the unit has an 80% attendance requirement.

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
