Synopsis: The philosophy and practices of classroom music education. The focus is on music curricula - their theoretical underpinning, development, implementation and evaluation. Influential philosophical approaches to music education, such as those of Swanwick, Reimer, Paynter and Elliott. Current classroom music practices and pedagogical approaches, such as those of Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Schafer. The potential role of music in integrated programs.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should have become familiar with a range of methods for teaching music in primary schooling; have gained knowledge and understanding of current primary music education practices; be able to evaluate music curricula; be able to develop effective classroom music programs.

Assessment: Essay (500 words, ungraded compulsory requirement) + Report (1500 words): 40% + Project (2000 words): 60%
