Synopsis: A general rationale for the teaching of LOTE in primary schools. Topics include Government language policy, current research in bilingualism, methods for setting up a LOTE program, and various models for teaching LOTE in the primary school.
Objectives: The learning objectives for this unit are to enable teacher trainees to understand the rationale behind languages' programs in primary schools; provide teacher trainees with an overview of the different types of language programs in primary schools and assist them with the preparation of lessons for such programs; introduce teacher trainees to CSF ll Pathway 1 for languages, and to the aims of the Early and Middle Years programs in primary schools in relation to literacy; provide teacher trainees with a forum for analysing, discussing and proposing solutions to the issue of 'crowded curriculum' and its impact on languages programs in primary schools.
Assessment: Two assignments (2500-3000 words each): 90% + Oral presentation: 10%
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
