Synopsis: This unit will examine social, political, and economic factors and the relationships between these factors and families in particular cultural contexts. While Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory has been the traditional theoretical conceptual tool for analysis and understanding of these factors, socio-cultural theories build on these ideas to provide a more complex picture of the relations between individual and cultural processes. The professional's response to the dynamic and complex processes involved in family socialisation and to the recognition that families are active participants in the socialisation processes will be examined.

Objectives: The aims of this unit are for students to demonstrate: An understanding of the complexity of the processes and factors involved in family socialisation within communities. An understanding of, and the ability to, critique the services which are available to support families. An understanding of, and the ability to, identify the professional's responsibilities to support families. The ability to analyse and evaluate the policies and legislation which impact on families.

Assessment: Assignment 1: Reflective Journal (2000 words:): Worth 50% + Assignment 2: Written Assignment (2000 words:): Worth 50%
