Synopsis: The cultural nature of the development of children birth to twelve years will be explored. The implications of development for learning, teaching and all aspects of teaching in the early and middle childhood years will be examined. Recent theoretical developments in child development will be analysed.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students are expected to be able to assess the likely impact of culture, family, genetic inheritance, birth order and life experience on development; observe development sensitively and record precise, relevant and accurate information that can be used in program planning and evaluation; apply understanding of and knowledge about development to program planning, implementation and evaluation; link the development of children in general and specific behaviours and skills of individual children to several contemporary theoretical perspectives.

Assessment: Seminar presentation and supporting documentation (1800 words equivalent): 45% + Essay (2200 words equivalent): 55%

Contact Hours: 2 hours per week + 20 hrs total (Singapore BECStudies students)

Prerequisites: EDF2201 or equivalent
