Undergraduate
(EDU)

Leader: Dr W T Seah

Offered:
Peninsula First semester 2005 (Day)

Synopsis: This unit is designed to build the competence and confidence of students in the discipline of mathematics. Students will explore a number of realistic situations in which the need for mathematical problem solving arises and will be expected to develop power to draw on and utilise personal skills and knowledge to enable them to solve mathematical problems. Content areas will include number, measurement, chance and data and geometry and involve the use of computers and calculators.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to describe the relationship between multicultural real-world contexts and basic mathematical ideas; appreciate the power of mathematics to solve problems in a range of these contexts; consolidate their knowledge and skills across the various strands within the Mathematics CSF; and use a range of strategies to solve mathematical problems.

Assessment: A folio of completed group and individual problem solving tasks(equivalent to 1500 words) 30% + Written report of a mathematical investigation (1000 words) 20% + Examination of key course content (2 hours) 50%

Contact Hours: 2 hours per week
