Synopsis: This unit aims to provide students with a set of evidence-based tools relating to diagnosis, prognosis, therapy and harm. Students will learn to formulate clinical questions so that they can be answered; to search for information, to critically appraise the evidence for validity and clinical importance, and apply the evidence in clinical practice.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will have developed the ability to: 1. Appropriately formulate answerable clinical questions. 2. Search the literature for information addressing these questions, and 3. Competently evaluate the literature for validity and clinical utility. 4. Be familiar with the technique and clinical audits as a tool used in the maintenance of quality assurance in healthcare. 5. Develop an audit commensurate with cultural and local clinical practice and personal need.

Assessment: Assignment One - case study (10%), Assignment Two - clinical question (10%), Assignment Three - search strategy (20%), Assignment Four - critical appraisal of three articles (60%).
