Synopsis: History of computing, development of electronic digital computers and their subsequent architectural evolution, history of software (compilers, operating systems, network technology) and how all of these developments have been played out in the computer industry. Risks of computer usage, and the legal and ethical implications of computer failures. Technical legal issues including software copyright, patent protection, and licensing. Problems arising from the nature of large-scale software development within large organisations and managerial, ethical and professional responsibilities.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 70% + Assignments 30%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures per week

Prerequisites: CSC2020 or CSE2302, CSC2030 or CSE2303, CSC2040 or CSE2304 and CSC2050 or CSE2305 (or equivalent)
