Synopsis: This subject aims to provide students with an understanding of the use of the various components required to develop successful client-server applications. Both theoretical and practical approaches will be presented to the problems of building client-server applications. Topics include use of the term `client-server'; parts of the client-server; comparison of different client platforms; network issues; comparison server platforms; software components - GUI tools; 4GL tools; use a client/server database systems (Oracle) connectivity options (ODB/CJDBC, CORBA/IIOP and TCP/IP protocols). Develop both a 2 tier and 3 tier client-server application.

Assessment: Assignments 50%; Examination 50%

Contact Hours: One two-hour lecture and one two-hour tutorial per week

Prerequisites: COT2132 or CSE2132, or COT2138 or CSE2138

Prohibitions: COT3031, CSE3031, GCO3823.
