Synopsis: This unit provides students with the opportunity to investigate an aspect of health informatics, which has particular interest or relevance to them. It will build upon all the knowledge that they have acquired during their study. Students will be given the option of working individually or collaboratively on a task which must be approved by the supervisor and course coordinator prior to its commencement. The project can be conducted in a variety of topic areas, which may include (a) The evaluation of a current use of information technology within a clinical environment or (b) An in-depth investigation and report of a relevant topic in health informatics.

Objectives: At the end of the project students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate a capacity to undertake health informatics research in a structured and analytical fashion. 2. Demonstrate skills in project design, conduct and reporting; 3. Demonstrate expertise in the preparation of a research plan targeting a topic area specific to the project.

Assessment: Participation and presentations in the on-line discussion group (30%) + Project report (70%).
