Synopsis: The unit focuses on the leading principles/theories of decision making. The relationship between decision making and the development of health/clinical information systems as decision support tools will be investigated. The standards of decision support system design, including legal and ethical issues, will also be explored in this unit. The unit will conclude by considering some of the implications of decision support in healthcare policy and clinical management.

Objectives: On completion of this unit the students will have the opportunity to meet the following objectives; 1. Understand the prinicples/models of decision making. 2. Identify the data/information and data structure required for decision support systems and the impact of data quality on these systems. 3. Assess existing decision support applications and systems. 4. Anticipate the impacts of information management and decision support on practice and policy making and; 5. Understand the role of standards with regard to decision support standards and developments.

Assessment: Participation in on-line discussion group (30%) + Written assignment of approximately 2,500 words (70%).
