Synopsis: The analysis of global media formats (eg., news, talk shows) and their changing modes of reception and resistance by local audiences. Seminars discuss the implications of these processes both for cultural and national identities and communication policy philosophy, particularly but not exclusively in Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Through considering internationally published research, audience theory is demonstrated to have a wide range of applications in consumer studies, electronic journalism, and policy and public relations practice.
Objectives: Upon completion of this unit students are expected to demonstrate: 1. A critical understanding of academic and popular discussions of media globalisation. 2. Awareness of its consequences for audiences, national culture, social identity and policy response. 3. An ability to apply this awareness to a number of nations, including Australia, Malaysia, Singapore.
Assessment: Essay (3,500 words): 40% + Essay (3,500 words): 40% + Seminar Presentation (2,000 words): 20%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
