Synopsis: Lacan's accounts of the ego, subjectivity and otherness; the unconscious and desire 'structured like a language'; the phallus and sexual difference. Relevance to philosophical accounts of subjectivity, theories of literary and visual representation, and feminist theory.

Assessment: Seminar paper (3000 words): 20% + Essay (6000 words) or two essays (3000 words): 80%
