Synopsis: A study of four seminal authors whose works have transformed European aesthetics and European literature in a fundamental way: De Sade, Dostoevsky, Nietzsche and Tolstoy. The investigation (through the thought of Deleuze, Merleau-Ponty and psychoanalysis) into the phenomenological aesthetics of the set of authors will lead to a revision of the concept of literary 'realism'.
Assessment: Seminar paper (1500 words): 25% + Essay (2000 words): 45% + Test (60 minutes): 30% + Third-year students will be expected to read more complex critical texts and to write a less descriptive and more self-reflective essay
Contact Hours: 2.5 hours (1 x 1.5 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
