Synopsis: This unit will introduce students to some of the key issues raised by Romanticism, place these firmly in their historical context, and trace their evolution. In particular, we will consider visions of social reform and individual liberation, the problematic position of women and the impact of major romantic traditions in the New World. Writers discussed will include William Blake, Marcus Clarke, Charles Harpur, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Victor Hugo, Edgar Allan Poe and Mary Shelley.
Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 50% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
