Synopsis: This unit continues on from the introductory chemistry subject CHM1731 and is designed to enhance the student's prior knowledge to a level which forms a basis for a variety of further studies at second level in the chemical, biological and environmental sciences. CHM1742 consists of selected topics in physical, inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry which are relevant to such programs while still providing a traditional first level chemistry course for students intending to major in chemistry. Laboratory exercises are used to extend theoretical understanding as well as develop practical skills.
Assessment: Two 2-hour examinations: 50% + eight computer tests: 30% + Practical work: 20%
Contact Hours: Three 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour tutorial and three hours of laboratory work per week
Prerequisites: CHM1731 or equivalent
