Synopsis: This unit covers the fundamentals of general practice psychiatry including an understanding of the methods of patient assessment, the classification of disorders and the principles of management (including medicolegal obligations). This unit sets the scene for the rest of the course and provides a general practice focus to the course material.

Objectives: By the end of this unit candidates should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the diagnostic and classificatory systems used in psychiatry. 2. Display knowlege of and skills in methods of assessment and diagnosis. 3. Understand the context of psychiatric care. 4. Reveal knowledge of relevant legislation and it's application to clinical psychiatric care.
