Synopsis: Continues the study of cell biology commenced in second year. Practical classes involve research projects in professional research laboratories. Topics covered include the cell biology of several highly differentiated cells, how abnormalities in cell biology lead to disease , imaging techniques and pathways to discovery in cell biology.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will have an advanced knowledge of the cell biology of several cellular organelles as well as the imaging techniques used to study these organelles. They will also understand the cell biology of several highly differentiated cell types and how abnormalities in cell biology lead to disease. They will also understand how research in cell biology leads to enhanced understandng of cell function. Research projects undertaken in scientific research laboratories will lead to improved understanding and appreciation of the scientific process, including experimental design, experimental procedures, data analysis and report writing.

Assessment: Examination: 45% + Assignment: 20% + Mid-semester exam: 15% + Project report: 20%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical class per week
