Synopsis: Protein structures, protein purification, enzyme inhibitors, receptors, crystallisation and structures of membrane proteins, antibodies, protein engineering, cofactors and vitamins. An introduction to protein 3-D structure determination. Nucleic acid structure, nucleic acid chemistry, nucleic acid function and nucleic acids as drug targets. An introduction to molecular biology. Stereochemistry and conformational analysis of carbohydrates, glycogen and glucose metabolism, lipid types, fatty acids nomenclature, components of biological membranes, functions of biological membranes, cholesterol metabolism and mechanisms of lipid transport.

Assessment: Final Exam: 70% (3 hours),Tutorial test 10%; Practical work and other tests 20%;
