Synopsis: This unit provides students with advanced training in conflict resolution principles and strategies, with emphasis placed on adolescent-parent and family law mediation. Students will be able to research and present specific interests within the mediation domain. Students will engage in on-going role-plays to develop skills of conflict analysis, active listening, purposive questioning and reframing. In conjunction with BHS3715 Mediation 1, successful completion of this subject meets the training requirements for Child and Family Mediators under the Family Law Regulations 1984.

Objectives: For students to develop an advanced theoretical and practical understanding of professional mediation practice. For students to obtain a thorough understanding of the theoretical, practical and research issues surrounding one area of conflict resolution. For students to gain practical experience of the mediation profession as required for accreditation as a Child and Family Mediator under the Family Law Regulations 1984.

Assessment: 4500 word research essay: 50% + 10 hours of supervised mediation practice and 2000 word reflection: 20% + 2500 word case study: 30% + Participation in 80% of seminars (hurdle requirement).

Contact Hours: 1 two-hour seminar per week, .5 - 1 hour of mediation practice per week.

Prerequisites: Completed GSC3715 or BHS3715 or approved professional training in Level 1 Mediation.
