Therapeutic Models: Theory and Practice ( 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: In this subject students will be introduced to a range of psychological therapies. Therapeutic models to be explored include: psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, family and existential. Teaching will be seminar-based and highly interactive; role-play and clinical vignettes will enhance the student's understanding of the different therapeutic paradigms examined. Engagement with the psychotherapeutic profession will be developed through student participation in professional seminars and workshops.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate: 1. an elementary theoretical and practical understanding of a range of therapeutic models. 2. a thorough understanding of the theoretical, practical and research issues surrounding at least one therapeutic model. 3. a practical introduction to the professions of psychotherapy and counselling.

Assessment: Research essay (4500 words): 50% + Professional reflection (2000 words): 20% + Case study (2500): 30%

Contact Hours: 1 three-hour seminar per week.

Prerequisites: Students must have satisfied the requirements of a three year bachelor degree.
