Synopsis: An overview of various forms of communication skills including individual, group and systems approaches. An exploration of interviewing approaches for data collection, assessment, problem solving and helping. Responsibility, listening, confrontation, assertion and empathy. Individual and group processes. Facilitation and exploration of personal and group issues.

Objectives: On completion of this subject students should: 1. Be familiar with a range of approaches to interpersonal communication and human relationships. 2. Be aware of the differences between communication theories that relate to interpersonal and group situations. 3. Be able to initiate, maintain and terminate a basic interview, demonstrating attendance, empathy and congruence. 4. Be able to demonstrate skills in assertion and conflict management. 5. Be able to facilitate a simple group activity. 6. Be able to formulate in writing personal statements of themselves in relation to the material presented in the subject.

Assessment: Insight journal (1500 words): 25% + Individual journal of groupwork (1500 words): 25% + Research project and tutorial presentation (2500 words): 50%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: Any of GSC1711, GSC1712, BHS1320, BHS1340, PSY1011, PSY1022 or equivalent
